Materials Testing – Failure & Root Cause Analysis

Minton, Treharne and Davies Engineering Services – Materials Testing

MTD has an international and established reputation in materials testing and diagnoses of material failures and their causes

We have a wide ranging and diverse experience in material failure investigation and root cause analysis, from the examination of a failed bolt, to the devising and implementation of test programs on large volume, production components.

MTD offer process support and material failure investigations to a broad spectrum of industries including Aerospace, Marine, Energy, Automotive, Medical and Steel Fabrication.

Investigation of material properties is a fundamental process to augment failure analysis and provide root cause when an engineering structure or component fails.

Modern Engineering demands lightweight efficient solutions which sometimes suffer unforeseen failure and therefore require investigation to establish the root cause. Materials testing, fractography and microscopy are the key tools which enable us to provide answers

Our fully trained and experienced staff perform investigations by testing and examining the properties structures of metals and alloys, composites, ceramics and coatings. To do this we use a variety of destructive and non-destructive methods including optical microscopes and scanning electron microscopes to identify the causes of component and material corrosion, degradation and fracture (fractography).

Mechanical Properties Testing

The structural examination of materials is undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of treatments and processing variables during manufacture in addition to diagnosing causes of failures in service.

Our accredited material & mechanical testing laboratories are staffed by a team of qualified, experienced and dedicated engineers and scientists. Samples extracted from an extensive range of materials from the failed and representative components are prepared for elemental and structural analysis, using a variety of destructive and non-destructive methods.

Typically these tests and inspections are conducted in accordance with national and international standards and specifications (e.g. ASTM, BS EN and ISO). MTD’s microscopy capabilities include both optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM), with our SEM capable of examining surfaces and fractures at up to 100,000 times magnification.

A range of mechanical testing procedures are available and covered in our schedule of UKAS accreditation. These include tensile, impact, bend and hardness testing. We are also involved in the testing of composites, in shear and compressions.

Our capabilities also include bespoke testing, whereby we collaborate with customers to compile a unique component /materials specific testing protocol to meet the client’s requirements.

MTD are experienced in providing innovative services, which can be supported by professional advice and expert witness support when required.
