MTD have wide ranging practical experience in mechanical testing to national and international standards as well as designing tests to suit our clients’ bespoke requirements.

Our UKAS accredited laboratories have mechanical test facilities which include tensile, impact and hardness testing. MTD have expertise in the mechanical testing of a wide range of materials including composites, polymers and metals of almost every type and form.

Mechanical testing is one of the key indicators of a materials’ properties, and is normally a requirement for any type of failure investigation or materials characterisation procedure. Our UKAS accredited metallurgical and materials testing laboratories have mechanical test facilities which include tensile, impact and hardness testing. We test materials in accordance with National and International standards; such as British Standards, European standards, ISO and ASME

Our mechanical testing facilities include:

  • Tensile (up to 500kN),
  • Charpy impact (at ambient and sub-zero temperatures),
  • Material hardness can be measured on many different scales including Vickers, Rockwell for metallics and Shore for polymers and rubbers. Measurements can also be made “on-site” using portable instrumentation.

Bespoke Fatigue Testing Services

We routinely test a wide range of material types and forms including sheets, plates, bars, rods, pipes, shafts, bolts, structural sections and castings, ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

Mechanical testing is often undertaken as part of the welder and weld procedure approval process. MTD provide full support throughout this process from witnessing the work, NDE inspection and full mechanical testing of welded test plates to EN and ASME requirements.

Upgrading of steels to higher specifications can also be undertaken by combinations of tensile and impact testing.

An important feature of any material testing is the topography of the samples’ surface. MTD have the capability and expertise to measure surface topography to ISO specification requirements to enable the characterisation of a surface, in greater detail than Ra alone.

Our laboratories and workshops have the capability to design and build bespoke testing equipment for “special” cases. A typical application could be to fatigue test high strength wires without having to manufacture small and often unrepresentative tests samples. We designed and manufacture a dedicated and bespoke fatigue testing machine to represent the in-service load conditions, including ambient salt spray. Having this in-house expertise makes MTD the “one-stop-shop” for mechanical testing.
