Fire and Explosion Investigation

Minton, Treharne & Davies Fire and Explosion Investigation Services – Cargo & Shipping Fires – Cause Risk and Extent

The MTD Fire and Explosion Group offer investigation services to determine the origin and cause of fires in all industries, with a strong focus on marine incidents, including cargo fires.

We have an expert team of engineers, scientists and mariners with experience of dealing with fires aboard vessels around the world. Our experts are based in our UK, Singapore and Australian offices

MTD offer a comprehensive fire and explosion investigation service with a team of Consultants which include highly qualified mechanical, electrical, and marine engineers, chemists, mariners and investigators. This team of experts is able to travel worldwide to determine cause, extent of damage and future risk with a view to presenting “expert” reports for use in legal disputes.

We have worked with and alongside national authorities in the investigation of fires, including the USCG, the MAIB, European Coast Guard bodies. We have led complex fire investigations, managing and supervising groups of forensic investigators in prolonging investigations in the USA and Europe.

Our team of dedicated fire and explosion investigators is supported by experts in related fields and extensive laboratory services. We have experts in metallurgy, materials, chemistry and biology, to provide further expert opinion as and when cases develop. They in turn are supported by our extensive laboratory services allowing direct in-house analysis of fire debris, samples and undamaged exemplars.

Determining the Origin and Cause of Fires

Our investigations frequently result in the gather of evidence for further laboratory investigation. This ranges from the collection of samples of materials that may have been unusually flammable, or the collection of mechanical and electrical components whose failure might have resulted in an incendiary event. This is or particular interest where the fire has started in a piece of machinery, such as an engine room fire, or in machinery that has been cargo, such as vehicles and plant.

Our laboratories are internationally recognised and accredited facilities, where we analyse parts, unknown materials and identify accelerant residues in fire debris. With many years’ experience, we have built up a large database of information allowing us to identify unusual risks and potential causes of fire.

We routinely investigate the properties of materials to evaluate their effect in fire environments, studying their ability to spread fire and their susceptibility to self-heating and potential to spontaneous ignition. We have assisted in the research leading to the revision of the IMO Recommendations for the carriage of a number of cargoes including coal and DRI.

Where it has become necessary we have created mathematical and/or physical models, together with three-dimensional computer images of fire scenes, to test predicted ignition sources, fire growth and spread.
