Our UKAS accredited laboratories are staffed by a team of qualified, experienced and dedicated Metallurgists and Material Scientists. Their analysis of metals and metal failures can involve both destructive and non-destructive methods, all of which are included in MTD’s equipment and expertise.

Metallurgy is the science concerned with the properties of metals. This is a massive topic because of the diversity of metals and alloys and their related mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, endurance and failure modes. Metals and alloys are used extensively and have been for many centuries. The huge range of metals and metallic alloys in current use, and the variety of their applications mean that problems are frequently encountered when materials are pushed beyond their normal capabilities.

MTD’s mechanical testing, scanning electron and optical microscopy facilities, combined with our NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) capabilities provide a comprehensive testing and analysis service to investigate metallurgical failures and provide our clients with root cause analyses and solutions to their problems.

Expert Materials Evaluation Services

Metal failures we have investigated are diverse ranging from issues such as the corrosion of hot water tanks in vending machines to the cracking and collapse of jib cranes and the sinking of huge cargo vessels.

We work to internationally recognised standards so that the preparation of samples from metals requiring elemental and microstructural analysis is consistent.

It is sometimes the situation that an application or failure is unique or obscure such that there are no standards to describe the specifics of the application. In such cases, we have the capability and experience to develop bespoke testing programmes, working in conjunction with the clients’ own procedures and to the most applicable standards and UKAS accreditations. Usually this requires custom-made testing equipment which we have the capability to design and construct in-house.
